Projece 4 – Pitch for the future

Projece 4 – Pitch for the future

Brief

Among the nine topics, I chose the one I was interested in — ocean to start my research. In addition, the ocean occupies nearly 71% of the earth’s surface, occupying the vast majority of the earth’s surface space, affecting the survival and development of human beings, the ocean is absolutely important to the future survival of human beings.

Mind map

The subject range of the ocean is very large. I tried to use mind mapping to sort out the content and refine the possible implementation direction. I chose environment from five general directions for in-depth discussion. Compared with other directions, environmental problems need people to make urgent changes

This is the Marine debris collected during the 2021 survey, ranked by quantity. As can be seen from the picture, plastic waste accounts for the largest proportion in the Marine waste, and plastic is not easy to degrade. So I would like to start with the perspective of plastic to call on people to pay attention to Marine pollution, reduce the use of plastic and avoid discarding plastic at will.

Frame my design challenge

After careful consideration, I narrowed it down to the plastic bags of everyday life.

Research

The man who designed the plastic bag was Sten Thulin, according to Gustaf Thulin’s family, he designed this bag to help the planet. At that time, paper bags were used a lot, and this involved the felling of a considerable number of trees. A problem that was creating profound difficulties for the planet’s ecosystem. Thulin’s idea was to create a bag that was strong, lightweight and could be used dozens and dozens of times. The result was a definite improvement in the situation.

So why are we reducing our use of plastic bags today?

The problem is, as it is evident, in the use we make of it. This problem concerns not only plastic bags but all products made of these materials. The polyethylene bag, initially designed to be used for several times, has become the opposite, a disposable object. Perhaps this is because plastic is cheap and therefore, people don’t care much about it. This lack of awareness is, therefore, the reason why today we have to face with the enormous pollution problem caused by these bags, which are scattered all over the planet, from the deep of the oceans to the tops of the mountains.

We are producing over 380 million tons of plastic every year, and some reports indicate that up to 50% of that is for single-use purposes – utilized for just a few moments, but on the planet for at least several hundred years. It’s estimated that more than 10 million tons of plastic is dumped into our oceans every year. We have developed a “disposable” lifestyle.

At the same time, animals are suffering from the effects of plastic.

Plastic bags in the ocean can be eaten by sea creatures and suffocated, thus losing their lives.

I saw this video on Tik Tok. The content touches me a lot. On the one hand, even animals are willing to take the initiative to clean up garbage and protect their homes. On the other hand, plastic bags in cities can not be cleaned up in time, let alone plastic bags in the ocean. We all know that plastic pollution has been a serious problem for a long time, so after so many years, what is human being doing now?

Large companies, such as supermarkets, have adapted by changing the way their products are packaged. A north London supermarket has recently become the first in Britain to introduce plastic-free zones (2018). This follows the first supermarket in the world to feature a plastic-free aisle in Amsterdam the previous year.

There are 197 countries in the world, and too few countries have taken legal measures to prohibit them.

Then I did some research on plastic bags in our life. Changes have been made as most shopping bags in UK supermarkets are biodegradable and environmentally friendly. So I conducted a research on the packaging of goods in supermarkets.

After investigation, the packaging bags of goods still have more than 60% of the proportion can not be recycled, only 20% can be recycled. Among them, the packaging can not be recycled goods are mostly vegetables, fruit, kitchen supplies and snacks. Items that can be recycled are mostly frozen foods, paper products and dairy products.

Despite research showing that human are concerned about the problem, plastic bags carelessly discarded on the road are still quite common. Some people’s awareness of environmental protection has not been put into action, and people’s awareness needs to be improved.

Summary

The pollution caused by plastic bags is increasing every year. Although people have made some changes, it is far from enough. I think it needs to be strengthened from the aspects of government, individual and consciousness.

After the above investigation, I have determined the content of film. I would like to record the process of plastic bags from use to discarding, and add some scenes of environmental pollution to the film, so that the audience can feel the crisis, strengthen our ties to the ocean. To alert people around the world to reduce the use of plastic bags. Or increase the use times of plastic bags and do not discard them at will.

Inspiration

This video really inspired me, Benjamin Von Wong photographed a mermaid, washed ashore in a sea of 10,000 plastic bottles, as a way to make the plastic pollution problem more interesting to people.

This is the segment of Beyond the Aquila Rift in Love, Death and Robots. I think this shooting method has a good reference value. Real and virtual scenes alternate, beautiful and hopeless. Beneath the placid surface, a frightening truth emerges. I was inspired by this shooting style.

Idea

My film starts from the perspective of plastic bags in life and describes the relationship between animals (including people), oceans and plastic bags
